Weniger ist mehr! Mit nur einer Drum Maschine, Gitarre und einer kreischenden Sängerin (im Wechsel mit Sänger Krystal) erzeugt die schwedische Band auf ihrem neuen Album „Roky" (Sounds of Subterrania) eine Power, die unglaublich ist. Derart direkt frisch und kraftvoll kam seit dem Debüt von Spillsbury keine Musik mehr aus meinen Boxen. Musik ohne Pausen, mit dem ewigen Drang nach vorne. Der Drumcomputer gibt den Beat vor und dazu gibt es druchgehauene Fuzz-Gitarren, die den Sound schön dreckig und punkig klingen lassen.
Aber brutaler als jedes Gitarrenriff ist der Gesang von Sängerin Mia, die dermaßen schief und schrill ins Mikrophonen kreischt, dass einem die Ohren bluten. Diese Überdrehtheit erinnert stark an die frühen Le Tigre. In Verbindung mit dem simplen, aber stets straighten Drum Maschine-Geplucker entstehen Songs mit einem ganz eigenen Popcharme und die nach der Tanzfläche schreien. Tracks wie wie das mitreißenden „Cut" oder „Dancehall Queen" werden bestimmt auch in der Elektroszene Gehör finden.

Da die Live-Energie nicht zu Gunsten der Produktion von "Roky" geopfert wurde, ahnt man schon, was man von einem Auftritt der schwedischen Band erwarten kann. Der Studio-Sound ist auch der Live-Sound und das ist gut so. In flexibler Dreierbesetzung (Gitarre wurde auch schon mal durchgereicht oder es gab Songs mit zwei Gitarren) spielten MKD als Vorgruppe von Sons of Cyrus im Gleis 22 und es machte Spaß dabei gewesen zu sein. Sänger Krystal hätte mit seinem strengen Outfit - Anzug mitsamt schwarzen Hemd und Krawatte, blonde kurze Haare und Schnäutzer - auch ohne weiteres bei Laibach an der Trommel stehen können. Dagegen gab Debbie den langhaarigen Gitarrenrocker im JZ-Style. Per Kopfdruck am Rekorder wurden die Beats und Bässe gestartet (die härter rüberkam als auf dem Album) und ab gings. Während sich Sänger Krystal abgehackt, roboterhaft zu der Musik bewegte, ging Sängerin Mia mit wilden Verrenkungen und geschlossenen Augen voll in der Musik auf. Die Frau sang so leidenschaftlich schief - die meint das wirklich ernst. Großartig! Dem Publikum gefiel es und auch der ein oder andere zu Beginn skeptische Schweine-/Garagenrocker ließ sich von diesem Auftritt überzeugen.
Im Vorfeld ihrer kleine Deutschland-Tour im November mit Sons of Cyrus sprach Unruhr mit Meine Kleine Deutsche-Gitarrist Mattias aka Debbie.
I think not so many people have heard about „Meine Kleine Deutsche“ here in Germany. So tell us something about the band. When did you started, what’s the idea behind “MKD”.
MKD:
We started out in 2002, Krystal had an old yamaha qx10 sequencer and we just made some nice and heavy beats with it, we recorded it onto a 4 track tape recorder and realized how easy it was to make nice songs to the beats. It was a lot of fun, that’s the main idea behind it all. It has to be fun doing it. On our first live performances we used the 4 track for the beats, it was kind of difficult, but it worked. For some reason we always had lots of technical problems when we are playing live. Minidiscs that suddenly doesn’t work, soundsystems that breaks in the middle of it all.
Of Course I have to ask for your strange name “Meine Kleine Deutsche” (not only for a swedish band…). Why did you choose a german name and who are “Meine Kleine Deutsche”? The fat pig on the cover of your album “Rocky”?
MKD:
Meine Kleine Deutsche is a codename for our names, Maria, Krystal and Debbie. It all felt very german with the first songs we made, and one of the first songs we named "Meine Kleine Deutsche". Its on the first album “Dirty Dancing” Bif Brothel). And I don’t think it’s a pig on the cover, we really don’t know which animal it is. I think it only exists one of its kind. It lives underground. In tunnels.
You sound very powerful, weird and enjoyable minimalist. It reminds me of bands like Le Tigre. So what are your roots for this "stripped down fucked up new wave"?
MKD:
Mainly it is Slayer and Lady Saw who is responsible for our latest sound. And some unnamed techno. Jamaican dancehall beats are really great.
Are you satisfied with the reactions for your new album “Roky”?
MKD:
Yes!!! It just got bigger than we thought, our label Sounds of Subterrania have done a great job promoting it. They are the best. Really good to work with. And its really nice that we discovered myspace, kind of late maybe, but anyway.
The cover artwork for “Rocky” was made by Åsa Johanssons. Can you tell us more about her art?
MKD:
Well, she makes a lot of videos too, and paintings of course. She has made a lot of these animal paintings. Crying animals. I really don´t know what to say, she is just the best painter around.
In November you’ll play a tour in Germany. What can we await…?
MKD:
Scandinavian heartache and envy, and lots of B.C .Rich guitars and power dancing. We are searching for the perfect live outfits for the moment. Office is the keyword for our latest clothes.
