Rockmusik - wer denkt da nicht immer gleich an "Sex, drugs and Rock 'n' Roll"? Aber dass Studioalltag beim Aufnehmen einer CD ganz anders aussieht und eher harte Arbeit etwa im Sinne eines "9 to 5" Jobs bedeutet, wird dabei sicherlich vergessen. Bei Big Boy liegt der Hauptteil dieser von Disziplin geprägten Arbeit in den Händen zweier Brüder, die in der Tat ein perfektes Team bilden. Unruhr besuchte sie direkt vor Ort und bekam einen umfangreichen Einblick und interessante Infos zur Aufnahme des neuen Albums "Ponygirl". Das Ganze geschieht hinter einer unscheinbaren Fassade, wo man eine solche Schatzkammer von Studio gar nicht vermuten würde...

Big Boy: one
day with the "Rock appointees"
Rock music - who doesn't
think right away of "Sex, drugs and Rock 'n' Roll"? But that
every-day studio work is a completely different thing and rather means hard
work like in a "9 to 5" job, most people forget for sure. For German
Newcomer Big Boy the main part of this disciplined labour lies in the hands of
two brothers, who actually form a perfect team. We visited them at the site of
recording and got a comprehensive insight and interesting information
concerning the production of the new album "Ponygirl". It is taking
place behind a unimposing house front, where you would never expect such a treasury...

Das Herzstück des Raumes wird gebildet von einer beeindruckenden Helios Konsole, von denen es nur noch wenige auf der Welt gibt. Solche waren früher zu Glanzzeiten der deutschen Studiotechnik z.B. in Berlin zu finden, und auf eben diesem hier haben auch Größen wie Bowie (der es auch im Jahre 2004 signierte) Songs aufgenommen. Durch eine glückliche Fügung geriet es an seinen neuen Besitzer, und das in aufwendig restauriertem Zustand zum Pauschalpreis. Auch das Gesangsmikroset lässt sich sehen und hören: u.a. rare Telefunkenmodelle, heutzutage hoch gehandelt. Aufgenommen wird analog auf Tape um einen optimalen Sound zu bekommen. Des weiteren steht auf den ca. 12 m2 alles bereit, was man an Instrumenten so spielen könnte, und die beherrscht Chef Clemens als Multitalent auch persönlich. Der perfekten Kreation des Big Boy-Sounds ist der Weg bereitet...

Aber schauen wir vorerst mal auf die Anfänge zurück: auch Big Boy und Clemens hatten zu Schulzeiten mal eine Band mit Treffen im Proberaum, Biertrinken (hier gibt es erstmal einen leckeren Kaffee), Songs zocken, vielen Diskussionen und allem was sonst noch so dazu gehört. Das Projekt Big Boy hingegen sind sie viel überlegter und bewusster angegangen, Entscheidungen liegen klar bei den beiden Masterminds. Die erste Idee war, mit dem Cover-Song "Get over it", der OK Go im Jahre 2002 einen großen Hit bescherte, zu starten und weitere eigene Songs ins Set einzubauen. Das größte Problem auf das man stieß war die vehemente Kritik der A&R-Manager (z.B. bei Showcases für Plattenfirmen) bezüglich der Musik auf den ersten Aufnahmen oder auch wegen des gewagten Styles. Schnell war behauptet, Big Boy sei nicht echt, nicht "for real". Aber da fragt man sich, was denn in Zeiten von Emo, gecasteten Dreamteams oder Bands wie Tokio Hotel "for real" ist in der Musikbranche?
Für Big Boy macht es keinen Sinn in eine Schublade gesteckt zu werden, denn das ist auch nicht im Sinne des Erfinders. So hat sich der Sänger schon zu Kindergartenzeiten einfach mal mit Mamas Utensilien geschminkt und nicht weil das auf einmal in irgendeiner Musiksparte Mode ist. Auch andere mögliche Ähnlichkeiten sind wohl eher rein zufällig. Außerdem ist er ein bekennender Tattoofan und hat seit der letzten Tour einige neue Kunstwerke vorzuweisen, z.B. das "Ponygirl" - passend zum neuen Songmaterial.

Und da sich eben für die aufstrebende Band keine Plattenfirma fand, obwohl es bereits Unterstützung vom Szenemagazin Sonic Seducer gab und obwohl die Fanschaft durchaus vorhanden war und stetig international zahlreicher wird (auch Dank Plattformen wie Myspace, das aber inzwischen auch fast schon zu groß geworden zu sein scheint, um es in diesem Sinne als Sprungbrett zu nutzen), gründete das Management ein eigenes Label um die Debüt-CD "Hail the Big Boy" auf den Markt zu bringen.
Für das neue Album, an dem seit September gearbeitet wird und das bis zum Sommer noch ein paar Monate auf sich warten lässt, haben sich Clemens und Big Boy beim Songwriting viel Zeit gelassen, um alles in Ruhe auszuarbeiten. Es ist ihnen wichtig, dass sie voll zufrieden sind mit den Stücken – manche Ideen haben sie auch wieder verworfen. Nach Beenden der Kompositionen wurden in den letzten Wochen Schlagzeug, Bass und Gitarren eingespielt, bei unserem Besuch waren gerade die Gesangsaufnahmen in Arbeit, ein Song pro Tag. Es sollen noch ein paar Synthi-aufnahmen und Gasteinspielungen, z.B. von dem beliebten Studiogitarristen Ossi folgen, dann kann Clemens die Songs abmischen und zum Mastern weitergeben. Wir durften ein paar vielversprechende Kostproben hören und können schon verraten, dass die neuen Songs etwas temporeicher, rockiger und vor allem grooviger sind…

Auch wenn der Mann an den Reglern dann lieber in heimischen Gefilden bleibt um sich anderen Projekten widmen zu können – wer will es dem visionär berufenen Rockstar Big Boy vergönnen, nach wochenlanger harter Arbeit des Songschreibens, Aufnehmens und Abmischens seine Live-Band (mit Bassist A.K., Schlagzeuger Happy und dem brandneuen Zugang Gabor an der Gitarre) um sich zu versammeln und den Ruhm zu ernten, wenn er wieder zurück "on the road" geht und live vor denen spielt, die dies alles zu schätzen wissen: den wahren Fans?!
Wir sagen vielen Dank an die Big Boy-"Beamten" und wünschen Erfolg für das Album und die Tour, die für Herbst dieses Jahres neben ein paar Festivals geplant ist. Zunächst gibt’s zwei Termine mit bereits neuen Songs im Gepäck, bevor die beiden verdientermaßen ein bisschen relaxen werden in ihrem Heimatland Schweden.

The heart
of the room is an impressive Helios console, which is a rarity in the world. Such
consoles you would have found e.g. in

But let's
look back at the beginnings: when still in school, also Big Boy and Clemens used
to have a band with rehearsal meetings, drinking beer (here we are served a
tasty coffee), playing songs, many discussions and all the typical trimmings. In
contrast to this they started their project Big Boy much more considerate and
intentional, decisions are clearly made by the two masterminds. At first the
idea was, to set off with a cover version of "Get over it", which provided
a great hit for OK Go in 2002, and add some own songs to the set. The biggest
problem that occurred was vehement criticism of A&R managers (e.g. at showcases
for labels) referring to the music on the first demos or due to the daring
styling. It was quickly stated, Big Boy was not authentic, not "for real".
But you might ask yourself, what is real on the music market in times of Emo, casted
dream teams or bands like Tokio Hotel?
For Big Boy
there is no point in being put into a category, because that is certainly not
the intention of the inventor. Already at times of nursery school the singer
sometimes took mom's makeup stuff and put it on for fun and not because this
has become fashionable in the one or the other music branch. Also other
possible similarities seem to come about by pure chance. In addition he is an
avowed tattoo fan and can present some fresh pieces of art, e.g. the "Ponygirl"
– matching the new song material.

And because
there was no label found for the upcoming band although they had support from
the scene magazine Sonic Seducer and although the number of fans had been
growing steadily (thanks to platforms such as Myspace, which seems to have
become too large by now to use it as a stepping stone for a career), the management
founded its own label to promote the debut CD "Hail the Big Boy".
Clemens and
Big Boy took their time to write the songs for the new album that they have
been working on since September and that will keep the fans waiting until
summer. They patiently prepared everything because they wanted to make sure
that they are absolutely content with the creation – some ideas where even
squashed altogether. After finishing the compositional work drums, bass and
guitars were recorded, during our visit at the end of February the singing
takes were in process, one song per day. Some synthesizer sounds and some guest
recordings, e.g. by guitar player Ossi, were also planned. The next steps are
mixing by Clemens and final mastering. We were allowed to listen to some
promising samples and can reveal that the new songs are uptempo, real rock and
groovier…

Even if the
man at the buttons prefers to stay in domestic regions to be able to address
himself to other projects then – who will deny the visionarily assigned rock
star Big Boy to go back on the road, having worked hard for months. For this
purpose he will gather his live band (with A.K. at the bass, drummer Happy and
brand new entrant Gabor at the guitar) to harvest some fame and glory when
playing live for those who appreciate all this: the real fans!
We would
like to say thank you to the Big Boy "appointees" and wish them a lot
of success for the album and the tour, which is scheduled for autumn,
additionally to some festival gigs. For now there will be two shows with new
songs in the set list before both of the two will deservedly relax some time in
their home country
